New Zealand: Germon marks milestones
From The Press
Former New Zealand cricket captain Lee Germon ended one
relationship yesterday and celebrates the continuation of
another today.
Germon severed his two-year contract with New Zealand Cricket
(NZC) yesterday, but will not be celebrating that parting
tonight.
Germon and his wife, Toni, will instead mark their first wedding
anniversary with a quiet celebration with family and friends.
Germon sought to quit his NZC contract because of heavy work
commitments for his employer, Bank of New Zealand, during the
November-December period of Conference Cricket.
The newly instituted Conference Cricket was not an issue when
Germon signed his original contract.
However, circumstances have changed dramatically since he was
dumped as captain earlier this year.
"When I applied for my job with the bank, Conference Cricket was
not set in concrete. We now find it is virtually four weeks with
no spare days and in my job I can't cope with that."
New Zealand Cricket and Germon reached a mutual agreement over
the termination of his contract though Germon would not say
whether he was paid out in full.
He said he understands the implications of his decision but
doubts whether his move will come back to haunt him.
"Playing for New Zealand isn't high on my list of priorities at
the moment. Conference Cricket is supposed to be a launching pad
for international cricket so if you're not playing, it would
suggest you might struggle." He will focus on the Shell Trophy,
Shell Cup and Max competitions with Canterbury.
