Prolonged heavy rain forced umpires Dunne and Nicholls to call off the game on the third day - the same day as the abandonment of the Faisalabad Test between Pakistan and Zimbabwe. Dunne had been an umpire for New Zealand's only previous abandoned Test, which was also at Dunedin, against Pakistan 1988-89.
