†NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA 1987-88

At Brisbane, January 16

15-Apr-1989
At Brisbane, January 16. New Zealand won by four wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Rain before the start of play reduced the match to 43 overs, which became 39 when New Zealand bowled their overs too slowly. They were subsequently fined $A1,600. Only Kuruppu overcame the problem of a slow outfield with a hard-hitting 47, sharing in partnerships of 52 in 99 balls with Mahanama and 43 in 41 with de Silva. Accurate bowling by Chatfield, conceding only 3 runs per over, made Sri Lanka's task even more difficult. Crowe took control while he was at the crease, seeing 96 runs added before he was splendidly run out by the combined effort of Ramanayake and Labrooy. It was left to Hadlee, striking a lofted on-drive, to win the match with eleven balls to spare.
Man of the Match: M. D. Crowe. Attendance: 5,546.
