No Quaid Trophy matches during Ramazan

Karachi, Nov 8: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided on Wednesday to reschedule the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Grade-I Cricket Championship's last three rounds and the final because of the sanctity of the holy month of Ramazan.

The first-class championship, according to the original schedule, was to be played continuously until mid December with the last three rounds of matches and the Dec 16-20 final at Lahore coinciding with the month of Ramazan, which will begin either on Nov 26 or 27.

The championship will take of almost six weeks after the eighth of the 11 rounds concludes on Nov 25 and restarts after Eid-ul-Fitr on Jan 2. The five-day final will now be played from 20 to 24 at the Qadhafi Stadium (Lahore).

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Grade- II Championship will be played from Nov 14 to 16 at Sahiwal and Multan while the four-day final is scheduled from Nov 19 at the venue to be decided later.

The first semi-final features winners of Pool 'A' v winners of Pool 'C' at the Biscuit Factory Ground in Sahiwal. Javed Ashraf and Asad Malik are the umpires with Khalid Niazi as match referee.

The other semi-final pits winners of Pool 'B' against Pool 'D; champions at the MCC Ground in Multan. Umpires for this match are Atiq Khan and Naushad Khan with Ilyas Khan as match referee.

The PCB has also released the draws of the Patron's Trophy National Grade-I and Grade-II Cricket competitions which are scheduled to commence in the last week of January next year.

Eight departmental outfits will play each other in the seven rounds of the first-class championship, starting from Jan 26. The tournament will be suspended for 10 days because of Eid-ul-Azha before the start of the last round of fixtures.

The five-day final will be staged at the Qadhafi Stadium from March 17.

One notable absentee in the 2000-2001 championship are Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), who have reportedly disbanded their cricket team.

Another salient feature of the Grade-I fixtures is that National Stadium Karachi (NSK), has been allocated three matches. It may be worth mentioning here that the PCB had clearly decided to stage only international matches at the NSK.

In contrast, none of the 11 Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Grade-I ties in the city has been scheduled for the Test centre with the UBL Sports Complex staging eight matches while the KCCA Stadium responsible for the remaining three.

The non-first-class Grade-II tournament will be contested by six teams, including newcomers Army. Other participating teams in the single league tourney are Sui Gas, Pakistan Education Boards (PEB), Pak PWD, Universities Grants Commission (UGC) and Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

The matches of this competition are scheduled for Lahore and Sialkot only with the four-day final from Feb 2 at an undecided venue.
