PAKISTAN v. NEW ZEALAND

At Karachi, October 24, 25, 26, 27

15-Apr-1971
At Karachi, October 24, 25, 26, 27. Drawn. On a pitch which took spin readily, and from which pieces were cut regularly by almost every ball, even on the first morning, Pakistan spent six hours and twenty minutes making 208 runs. Sadiq, in his first Test, batted four hours for 69, Hanif, in what, it transpired, was his last, occupied two hours, twenty minutes over 22. Pakistan reached 52 without loss at lunch and 121 for four at tea. On the second morning Nazir and Asif Masood hit out, but the final total was only 220.
New Zealand attacked at every opportunity, scoring 274 in five hours. Dowling and Murray led with 92, and although the seventh wicket fell at 164, Yuile and Hadlee scored 100 for the eighth in ninety minutes, Hadlee hitting one 6 and eight 4's in his 56. The Pakistan second innings was a defensive drag--eight and three-quarter hours for 283. Mushtaq spent two hours scoring 19; Hanif two and a half hours for 35; Sadiq three hours for 37. Nazir, who made his first Test memorable with seven wickets in an innings, also batted sensibly in company with Intikhab.
New Zealand had three and a quarter hours to score 230, but Pervez struck telling and swift blows. Burgess, however, batted attractively and the threat of defeat disappeared.
