Sri Lanka put Pakistan in to bat, but after an early breakthrough they were frustrated first by Ramiz Raja and then by Miandad as the Pakistanis maintained a scoring rate of 5 runs an over. Madugalle, who was fielding at third man, was injured when he was hit by a stone thrown from the stands. However, he recovered in time to bat and was one of five Sri Lankan wickets to fall for 80 in 21 overs. Mendis played a captain's innings but was fighting a lone battle.
