PNG to test progress in Townsville

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Cricket Team arrived in Townsville yesterday for an intensive training camp and 3-match series against the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Regional Team.

The tour forms part of PNG's preparation for the upcoming ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 event which will be held in Darwin from the 27 May - 2 June. The ICC WCL is the qualifying structure for ICC Associate Members vying for a position in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

"This tour provides us with a great opportunity to test our progress ahead of WCL Division 3," commented PNG Captain Rarua Dikana.

It will be the second time in as many years that the PNG Team has travelled to Townsville, Sister City of PNG Capital Port Moresby, where strong relationships are being forged.

ICC East Asia - Pacific (EAP) Development Officer, Ben Oliver said "The culture, climate and accessibility make Townsville an ideal fit for PNG. The PNG Team received a very warm welcome here in 2005 and both the ICC EAP office and PNG Cricket Board are very keen to foster an ongoing relationship with Townsville."

In an added bonus for the PNG Team, Queensland Cricket Regional Coaching Coordinator Vic Williams will travel to Darwin for WCL Division 3. Williams will continue his advisory role with PNG following his recent visits to PNG and believes the Townsville tour will be perfect preparation for Darwin.

"The climate and conditions here in Townsville will be similar to those experienced in Darwin," added Mr. Williams. "Competitive match practice on turf wickets is an important part of the team's preparation for WCL Division 3."
