Glamorgan were indebted to Mike Powell who scored his first Championship hundred of the summer, and helped to steer the Welsh county to 228/7 at the close of the first day in the county`s match with Worcestershire at Cardiff.
After the loss of the morning session due to rain, Robert Croft won the toss and elected to take first use of the Sophia Gardens wicket. However, within the first hour his side had slipped to 31-3 as Australians Matt Mason and Nantie Hayward made early inroads with the new ball.
However, Powell remained resolute and initially with Matthew Maynard and later with Robert Croft, he led a recovery with some powerful drives. The sixth wicket stand between Croft and Powell had added 84 when Croft was run out, but Powell was unbeaten at the close on 116, and he will be looking for further tail-end resistance when the game resumes tomorrow morning with Glamorgan seeking further batting points in their quest for promotion from Division Two.
