Ramnaresh Sarwan returns to the West Indies' squad for the first of the two-Test home series against Sri Lanka. The 15-member squad includes two uncapped spinners in Sulieman Benn and Amit Jaggernauth, while allrounder Ryan Hinds makes a comeback.
Sewnarine Chattergoon has also been included, and from the 16-man squad for the Test series in South Africa, batsmen Brenton Parchment, Daren Ganga, Runako Morton, legspinner Rawl Lewis, allrounder Darren Sammy and reserve wicketkeeper Patrick Browne have been omitted.
Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Pedro Collins and Darren Powell provide the fast-bowling options, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle and Sarwan are the key batsmen in the line-up. Hinds and Dwayne Bravo are the allrounders in the squad. Denesh Ramdin holds his place as wicketkeeper.
The West Indies selectors had earlier favoured Gayle over Sarwan as captain; an injured Sarwan missed the tour to South Africa and Gayle was his replacement as captain. Gayle led West Indies to a win in the first Test in Port Elizabeth but was himself plagued by injuries on the tour, during which West Indies lost the Tests 2-1 and the ODIs 5-0.
The first Test against Sri Lanka starts on March 22 in Guyana.
West Indies squad: Chris Gayle (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Sulieman Benn, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Fidel Edwards, Ryan Hinds, Amit Jaggernauth, Darren Powell, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
