31-Aug-2000
Current League Champions Hastings Priory will retain the League title in the
Shepherd Neame Sussex League unless Brighton and Hove win their two
remaining matches. Rain affected all games on Saturday and Hastings managed
a victory at Three Bridges, but Brighton and Hove lost a similar game
against Chichester.
Hastings have completed their programme and lead Brighton and Hove, who have
two games to play, by 47 points. A team can take up to 30 points from a
game. After the rain on Saturday morning the rule books were out everywhere
and teams did their best to get some sort of match in the scramble for
points.
Hastings won a 25 overs a side game at Three Bridges, while an exciting game
at Brighton and Hove saw the home side needing a six to tie from the last
ball of a 27 overs a side match against Chichester. Keith Greenfield, with
84, took Brighton to the brink of victory before being bowled off the final
delivery by Neil Budden to give the visitors a win by six runs.
Eastbourne and Horsham drew at the Saffrons, while the game at Haywards
Heath where Bexhill were the visitors was called off without a ball being
bowled. As a result Bexhill will be relegated to Division Two.
