The Cantonal `Sixth-form College' of Glarus, Switzerland, has been running an optional subject entitled "Sports and Culture in English Speaking Countries" for students in the sixth form. The 18-year-old boys and girls dealt with `Cricket' during the winter season 2004/5. They learnt about its laws, customs and special vocabulary as well as Cricket history and culture.
Another part of the subject was to actually practice and play the game. After an introduction by two teachers of the school in Glarus, the students were invited to join a couple of training sessions with the Royal Zurich Cricket Club. Their impressions were as follows:
  • We were welcomed by the club members and they showed us their techniques in a very amusing and friendly way. (Julie)
  • When I saw the team I was a bit surprised because I expected them to be wearing the typical white cricket clothes. They were all from different countries and of different ages. I had the feeling that they enjoyed our visit. (Mirjam)
  • It was amazing to see from how far people come just to play cricket. (Daniel)
  • The people were all from different nations. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to understand the Indian pronunciation. (Tom)
  • I liked the training but sometimes I didn't understand everything they said or tried to explain to me, so I just said, "Yes, yes!" (Corinne)
  • It was interesting to see how the team members played and also to play with them. Now we know what we have to learn and what it looks like when you know how to bat and bowl. (Regi)
  • It was a good experience to see how fast the game can be. Cricket is a very interesting game and if there were a club near Glarus it would be fun to play there. (Tom)
  • For me it was very special to have to run and bat with pads on my legs because I felt a bit handicapped and I couldn't run as fast as usual. (Kira)
  • At first I had some problems to understand every rule they had, but then it worked out very well. When one of us was batting they didn't bowl as fast as they could, but when it was one of them, I could hardly see the ball. (Silja)
  • Sometimes I was scared to death! (Daniel)
  • It was impressive to see how emotional the game is when played by people who like the game. (Julie)
  • One of the things that impressed me most was the fight for every single run. (Daniel)
