The South African XI were given the perfect start by Smith and Boeta Dippenaar as they blasted 109 in 14 overs. Dippenaar's 54 was uncharacteristically rapid, coming from 45 balls, and Smith's 79 took only 54 deliveries. Their departures did not slow the scoring rate as Nicky Boje and Neil McKenzie enjoyed themselves as the bowlers were dispatched to all corners of the ground.
Ashwell Prince didn't arrive at the crease until the 29th over and still ended up as top-scorer, his unbeaten 84 ensuring the score took on intimidating proportions. Prince hit eight fours and a six in his confident innings, which will send him into the forthcoming season with his confidence high.
Facing an asking rate approaching eight an over the Jacques Kallis XI never had pray of chasing down the target, especially when the top three fell for 51 inside the opening 10 overs. Brian Lara managed only four before he was bowled by Andre Nel and Kallis himself was caught behind off Charl Langveldt to leave the score on 100 for 4.
Kirsten and Neil Johnson played their shots with Kirsten casting off the workmanlike batting style which characterised his international career. Kirsten's 73-ball innings included 11 fours and a six but Langeveldt and Boje mopped up the tail as the last five wickets fell for 12 runs.
