Trinity trounce St. Bees by 8 wkts

TRINITY COLLEGE, Kandy trounced the visiting St. Bees College from United Kingdom by eight wickets in a limited over cricket match played at the Asgiriya Stadium.

The visitors, taking first lease of the wicket, were all at sea against some accurate bowling by medium pacer Angus Jayasena (3 for 5) H. Samath (2 for 12) C. Aluthge (2 for 9) before they were dismissed for a paltry 66.

The `Lions' in reply hit up the required runs in just 16.3 overs with Suranga (31) and Dasun Weeraratne (22) doing the scoring.

This was the first time during this season that the lions were able to have a full days play at the Asgiriya Stadium as no less than four matches have been called off due to bad weather.

St. Bees College: 66 all out in 29.1 overs (P. Radford 23, Angus Jayasena 3 for 5, H. Samath 2 for 12, C. Aluthge 2 for 9)

Trinity College: 67 for 2 in 16.3 overs (S. Gamage 31, D. Weeraratne 22, W. Rudd 1 for 6).

Trinity win again

IN another match Trinity College beat St. Bees College, England by 92 in a limited over match played at the Asgiriya Stadium.

Trinity College: 164 for 7 wickets in 20 overs (N. R. De Raffayal 41, K. Weeraratne 20. D. Weeraratne 61, J. Brejson 4 for 23)

St. Bees College: 72 for 8 in 20 overs (P. Radford 23, K. Weeraratne 3 for 2, N. R. De Raffayal 3 for 3).

* Sri Lanka, along with Australia, Netherlands, South Africa, India, Ireland, New Zealand and the defending champions England have qualified to play in the quarter finals of the Hero Honda World Cup tournament which commences this weekend. The eight teams - four from each group, qualified after a ten-day semi league qualifying round. Quarter final line-up:

Saturday: Australia v Netherlands in Lucknow Sunday: Sri Lanka v England in Mohali Monday: South Africa v India in Patna Tuesday: Ireland v New Zealand in Mumbai Semi finals: Wednesday: Saturday's winner v Monday's winner in Gwahati Friday: Sunday's winner v Tuesday's winner in Chennai Final: At Eden gardens, Calcutta on December 29.

* Australia sprang the biggest shock of the Hero Honda Women's World cup tournament when they humbled the reigning champions England by eight wickets in the last qualifying round match played in Nagpur. After a series of record huge totals, England were bowled out for 95 runs off 49.4 overs in this crucial game which determined the Group `A' leaders.

B.Danels (23) and M.Reynard (23) top scored for England. Pacewoman C. Fitzpatrick (3 for 25) and O.J.Magno (4 for 10) were the most impressive for Australia. In reply, Australia reached the easy target in 27.5 overs with opener B.J.Clark (40) and M.Goszko (51 n.o) playing two fine innings.

* Sri Lanka will take on the defending champions England in the second quarter final of the Hero Honda Women's World Cup tournament match to be played in Mohali on Sunday. Sri Lanka finished third in Group `B' with nine points (a win, a tie and two defeats) behind New Zealand (21 points with three wins and a tie) and India (18 points with two wins, a tie and a no result).

England who won their first five matches in-a-row were comprehensively beaten by Australia in the last match. Australia finished on top of group `A' with 27 points (four wins and a no result), followed by England (24 points with four wins and a loss), South Africa (18 points with 3 wins and 2 defeats) and Ireland (15 points with 2 wins, a no result and 2 defeats).
