Daryl Tuffey is the big World Cup winner from Kyle Mills's knee surgery after being called into the New Zealand squad for the first time in two years. Mills was forced to have an operation and his vacancy will be filled by Tuffey in the 15-man squad to go to the Caribbean.
Tuffey, who tore a shoulder tendon two years ago, was also picked in the 13-man outfit for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy starting on Friday. "It has been a long journey back for Daryl from such a serious injury," John Bracewell, the coach, said. "But the selectors have been impressed by his performances and are satisfied that he is ready to once again play international cricket."
New Zealand chose a predictable World Cup squad with Tuffey the only addition to the players who missed the finals of the Commonwealth Bank Series last week. Jacob Oram and Scott Styris proved their fitness during the closing stages of the tournament while Craig McMillan, who was dropped for Styris, has won a spot.
Jeetan Patel and Daniel Vettori make up the slow-bowling options and Mark Gillespie sealed his place with strong performances in Australia. However, the best news for New Zealand was the naming of Shane Bond, who was managed through the tri-series and collected 11 wickets in six games.
Peter Fulton, who struggled towards the end of the contest, and Michael Mason have been left out of the Chappell-Hadlee squad and will play for their provinces during the series. The first game is at Wellington on Friday and the second and third matches are at Auckland and Hamilton.
