The first day of the 16th MTN Club Championships got under way in Pretoria today.
Northerns Cricket Union is hosting this prestigious event for the seventh time in a row since 1997.
Six matches from two groups of six teams each were played at Harlequins Oval, Groenkloof Oval, Technikon Oval, Hofmeyr Park, Centurion Laudium and LC Oval.
Results (Day 1)
Section One:
In a match that was played at Hofmeyr Park, Technikon Free State were hammered by Stellenbosch University by 109 runs. Batting first, Stellenbosch made an imposing 299 for 5. In reply, Technikon Free State could only muster 190 for 7 in their allotted 45 overs.

At Technikon Pretoria Oval, Spec Savers UPE scored a morale-boosting victory over United Club of Border by 174 runs to claim top spot on the log. UPE reached 287/8 and restricted United to 113 all out in 28 overs with spinner Ian Postman taking four wickets.

Victoria Club which boasts the likes of Ashwell Prince, JP Duminy and Rory Kleinveldt swept Avion Park from Easterns aside with a 63-run victory.

Section Two:
At LC Oval at the University of Pretoria, defending champion, UCT beat Sparkport Delta by 5 wickets. Delta batted first and found themselves on the back foot. They were bowled out for 146. KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins' coach, Eldine Baptiste with 28 and Dale Benkenstein with 20 were Delta's highest scorers. UCT came out victorious in only 28 overs.

Last year's beaten finalist, TUKS overcame Yorkshire of Kimberley by 7 wickets in a match that was played at Groenkloof Oval. Yorkshire were sent in to bat and were skittled for 168. In reply, Tuks reached the required 169 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.

Impala Mine Club from North West made 203 for 9 in their allotted 45 overs, but it wasn't enough to stop Pirates of Gauteng to reach the required total of 204 for victory.
