Wales have named a squad of fourteen for Monday's inaugural international
challenge match against the full England one-day side at Sophia Gardens.
Steve James, the Captain, who was forced to miss Wednesday's record-breaking
Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy tie against Surrey at The Oval because his
daughter was ill, is hopeful of being able to lead the Wales team out on
Monday.
The balance of the side suggests that Matthew Maynard will keep wicket for
Wales, as he did for Glamorgan before breaking his hand in a Benson & Hedges
Cup game against Gloucestershire in early May. Maynard hasn't kept wicket in
a game since returning to the Glamorgan side last week and will test his
hand in practice this weekend. Mark Wallace is named in the fourteen as
cover.
Steffan Jones, Tony Cottey and Jacques Kallis are all included in the squad,
which will meet up for practice in Cardiff on Sunday. The final XI will be
named on Monday morning. The squad is :
Steve James; Robert Croft; David Hemp; Jacques Kallis; Matthew Maynard; Mike
Powell; Tony Cottey; Adrian Dale; Darren Thomas; Steffan Jones; Andrew
Davies; Dean Cosker; Simon Jones and Mark Wallace.
In addition to Jones, Cottey and Kallis, all of the current Glamorgan
contracted players are very keen to play in what could be a unique occasion.
Because of this, selection of the final eleven has been placed in the hands
of a small group chaired by Glamorgan's Cricket Committee Chairman - Ricky
Needham, and including current Glamorgan President and former England
Captain - Tony Lewis.
England named a 15-man squad earlier in the week for the forthcoming NatWest
Series matches against India and Sri Lanka. Reports suggest that Darren
Gough will not be available for the game against Wales so the England team
is likely to come from the remaining fourteen.
The England squad is :
Nasser Hussain; Nick Knight; Marcus Trescothick; Michael Vaughan; Graham
Thorpe; Alec Stewart; Andrew Flintoff; Paul Collingwood; Ronnie Irani;
Jeremy Snape; Ashley Giles; James Kirtley; Darren Gough; Alex Tudor and
Matthew Hoggard.
England squad practice takes place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday Morning.
Information from Andrew Walpole, ECB Media Relations Manager (020 7432
1200). The Wales squad practice on Sunday afternoon.
Tickets will be available on the day of the match - priced at £25 for adults
and £8 for juniors (16 years and under), with Members' discounted tickets
available until 5pm today (21st June). The match is scheduled to start at
10.45am.
