Warwickshire skipper Neil Smith has called on his team members to
justify their talent in a do or die situation. Warwickshire, after the
defeat in the NatWest Trophy final, are still in a chance to go up in
the double challenge of Division Two of the National League and the
County Championship. But Smith knows that the team has to deliver the
goods consistently and lift his team for the final three weeks of the
season.
Eventhough it is not a struggle to get the teammates up after the
NatWest Trophy final defeat, Smith feels that they have put themselves
under pressure and now need to win almost every match in the final
three weeks of the season. Simth says that the club should not be in
this position considering the amount of talent, experience and the
number of good young cricketers that the club has. He also attributed
a mental difference between the ruthless yet successful side of the
mid 1990s and the current side.
Simth said "It is something we are aware of and trying to create.
That's the sort of environment we are trying to install in the side.
But starting this week we need to hit top gear and get some results."
On his future, Simth said "I'm captain this year and if they don't
want me to do the job, then fine, let someone else have a go. All I've
ever done is the best for the club."
He however added that he will give full support if someone else is
going to lead the side as he has been there for fourteen years and
always wanted to play and be a part of a successful Warwickshire team.
People always speculate when things are not doing well and look for
reasons like this."You might look at the captain, the coach, the
players, whoever, and that's just the way of the world", he told PA
sport.
