Australian opening batsman Mark Waugh and all-rounder Ian Harvey are under
injury clouds for the ICC Knockout Cup quarter-final against India here
tomorrow.
Waugh and Harvey were forced to remain at the team hotel to receive
treatment from physiotherapist Errol Alcott, missing the team's two-day
safari to the Masai Mara wildlife park.
Harvey is battling a shoulder problem, sustained when he took a diving
caught and bowled against England on Tuesday, while Waugh has a sore back.
Both will need to pass fitness tests at Australia's final training session
if they are to play against India, which qualified for the quarter-finals by
thrashing Kenya on Tuesday.
"They probably are in danger of missing, that's why they stayed back at the
hotel," said skipper Steve Waugh.
"They were pretty desperate to get to the Masai Mara and were disappointed
to miss out so they have both made a big sacrifice by not being there.
"We will find out tomorrow whether they are going to play or not but they
are both obviously concerns."
Alcott is hopeful both will prove their fitness although it appears Mark
Waugh will be unable to bowl even if he is declared fit to play.
Alcott said Harvey had landed heavily on his arm and "was a bit tender on
the day of the game with his shoulder movements".
"But he has responded fairly well," Alcott said of the Victorian
all-rounder.
"He has got full range movement, very little discomfort and good strength in
his shoulder."
Alcott said Waugh had been encountering back trouble for a while and had
reaggravated the problem during the warm-up before the England match.
"He has come up really well with treatment but we are looking to re-assess
him at training," he said.
The team's leading one-day batsman Michael Bevan has also been battling
shoulder trouble but is expected to play while paceman Glenn McGrath has
been declared a certain starter despite not having played in the two warm-up
matches.
He was rested following a long English county season although he did
complain of buttock soreness after one net session.
But Alcott said McGrath had pulled up fine and would not have been allowed
to make the trip to the Masai Mara unless he was 100 per cent fit.
