Both sides chose from 13 players. Zimbabwe owed much to Masakadza, who batted for almost six hours, and Waller, who helped him put on 74 for the sixth wicket. The home side struggled against the in-form Graeme Cremer, who had taken a career-best 8-61 with his leg-breaks in a domestic match the previous week, before flying to the Caribbean for the Test leg of the tour.
