If discussions in various sections of the Board of Control for Cricket
in India are to be believed, the country may have its first foreign
cricket coach. The name that is being seriously considered by some of
the top BCCI officials is none other than the former Australian wicket
keeper Rodney Marsh. The latter also is not averse to the idea of
taking charge of the Indian cricket team provided the salary is
suitable. However, the BCCI will only take a final decision on the
matter after consulting some of the senior members of the team.
Marsh's handling of the students at the National Cricket Academy has
impressed everybody amongst the Indian cricket administrators. The
problem that they have now is Kapil Dev. The Board does not want to
sack Kapil under any circumstances. However, at the moment most of the
BCCI officials feel that Kapil has other things on his mind. In fact
at Dhaka during the last Asia Cup, Kapil Dev, at one point of time,
had seriously thought of resigning from the post. However, some of the
senior cricketers in the side prevented him from doing so. So even if
the contract between the BCCI and Kapil Dev is for two years, one
should not be surprised if he quits after the Sahara Cup at Toronto in
September. The Indian team's performance has also not been exactly
notable since he took charge of the Indian team last September.
Marsh's name has already been discussed amongst those who make the
decisions in the BCCI. And while former Australian captain Bobby
Simpson might have been the advisor to the Indian team in the past,
his country mate stands a very good chance of becoming the first
foreign coach of the Indian team.
