Day 2 Report
Surrey 693 v Nottinghamshire 224 for 8 at Whitgift School
Scorecard
Surrey rampaged their way to a dominating and unbeatable position against a shell-shocked Nottinghamshire side, who are struggling to avoid the follow-on and to maintain any hope in this one-sided contest. Mark Ramprakash added 88 today to reach an unbeaten 279, his highest first-class score. He collected a colossal 40 fours and four sixes in his marathon innings, which lasted almost nine hours. To make things worse for the Notts bowlers, Ian Salisbury and Saqlain Mushtaq continued their fruitful season with the bat as, along with Ramprakash, they boosted Surrey from 457 for 8 to 693 all out, putting on 236 for last two wickets. Salisbury blasted 65 from 66 balls and Saqlain 50 from 57 as a few bowling figures - and egos - took a bruising. Stuart MacGill floundered to 196 for 1 from 35 overs, and Chris Cairns 2 for 133 from 27. Notts needed a daunting 543 to avoid the follow-on, but Martin Bicknell put paid to that idea with three quick wickets - including his brother, Darren - to send them crashing to 20 for 3. Russell Warren (76) and Kevin Pietersen (79) added 113 for the fourth wicket, but Bicknell struck back to dismiss Cairns (26) and Chris Read (4). Paul Franks was caught by Graham Thorpe in the final over of the day to leave Notts on a miserable 224 for 8 - 469 runs adrift.
Middlesex 407 v Kent 285 for 6 at Lord's
Scorecard
Three late wickets gave Middlesex the advantage over Kent at a sunny Lord's. After Middlesex added 43 for the last two wickets to reach 407, Kent made steady progress in their pursuit. Rob Key (40) and Michael Carberry (49) gave good support to David Fulton, who fell 14 short of what would have been his first century of the season. Fulton hit ten fours in his 86, and had steered Kent to 218 for 3 when he was caught off Jamie Dalrymple. Andrew Symonds carried on the good work with a typically muscular 71 from 94 balls as Kent passed the follow-on mark in good shape. But after Matthew Walker was lbw to Paul Weekes for 17, Chad Keegan then removed the dangerous pair of Symonds and Geraint Jones late in the day to leave Kent trailing by 122 runs.
Day 1 Report
Sussex 385 v Lancashire 12 for 0 at Hove
Scorecard
Chris Adams collected his second century of the season as Sussex posted a big score against Lancashire. Adams hit 16 fours and five sixes in his dominant 140, and was the mainstay of an innings which wobbled after the fall of Richard Montgomerie and Tim Ambrose. Montgomerie scored an accomplished 72 at the top of the order, and when Ambrose fell to John Wood (3 for 64), Sussex were 156 for 4. However, Adams was not perturbed. He continued to crash the ball to all parts, with some handy support from Mushtaq Ahmed, who tonked a quick 60 from 87 balls as Sussex reached 385. Chris Schofield finished with 3 for 14, and Lancashire closed on 12 for 0 in their reply.
Warwickshire 15 for 1 v Leicestershire 346 at Edgbaston
Scorecard
Brad Hodge led Leicestershire to a competitive first-innings total against Warwickshire with a stylish 70, putting on 121 with Trevor Ward (42). Jon Maunders (38) and Darren Maddy (51) added 103 for the first wicket, and Leicestershire seemed to be cruising on 235 for 4 when Ward was out - but then suffered a middle-order blip when Alan Richardson (3 for 55) and Waqar Younis (3 for 52) grabbed quick wickets to send them spinning to 277 for 8. John Sadler kept his cool as the wickets fell, and brought Leicestershire up to 346 with a vital 59 not out. Then Vasbert Drakes bowled Nick Knight for a duck to give Leicestershire a boost going into tomorrow.
Frizzell County Championship Division Two
Day 2 Report
Hampshire 143 and 155 lost to Derbyshire 341 by an innings and 43 runs at The Rose Bowl
Scorecard
Dominic Cork finished with match figures of 10 for 67 as Derbyshire routed Hampshire by an innings and 43 runs inside two days at Southampton. Resuming at 185 for 6, Derbyshire rocketed up to 341 thanks to Nathan Dumelow, who smashed a career-best 75 and helped the last three wickets put on 142. Hampshire were 198 behind at the start of their second innings, but were never at the races as Cork and Graeme Welch took centre stage. They took four wickets apiece as Simon Katich again stood head and shoulders over the other Hampshire batsmen, who crashed like ninepins. Katich was left stranded on 48 not out, and even though Chris Tremlett hit a sprightly 30, it only delayed the inevitable loss for Hampshire, who crashed to 155.
Yorkshire 130 and 238 lost to Worcestershire 91 and 278 for 5 by five wickets at Scarborough
Scorecard
Worcestershire put their first-innings nightmare behind them to record a two-day victory against Yorkshire at Scarborough by the sea. Yorkshire added 65 more runs in their second innings, with Craig White top-scoring with 54 and receiving good support from the tail. Bearing in mind the avalanche of 25 wickets on the first day, chasing 278 should have been a daunting prospect for Worcestershire - but as the pitch lost its juice, Worcester steamed to victory in the extra half-hour of the second day. After Anurag Singh (41) and Graeme Hick (47) had made a solid start, Ben Smith kept his cool to score 87 not out and shared an unbroken matchwinning partnership of 90 with Gareth Batty, who was unbeaten on 54 from 59 balls.
Glamorgan 331 for 6 v Durham 355 at Cardiff
Scorecard
Mark Wallace and Matthew Maynard put Glamorgan in a strong position against Durham at Sophia Gardens. After it took them only four overs to capture the last two Durham wickets, Glamorgan's first-innings runs were shared around with Jonathan Hughes (39), Adrian Dale (66) and Maynard (70) all contributing. It was Mark Wallace, though, who really caught the eye with 94 not out, including 15 fours, as he approached his second first-class century. The Durham attack toiled manfully with Neil Killeen (1 for 33), Graeme Bridge (2 for 73) and Nicky Phillips (2 for 94) sharing the wickets, but by the close Glamorgan were only 24 shy of Durham's total with four wickets in hand.
Day 1 Report
Somerset 347 for 7 v Northamptonshire at Taunton
Scorecard
Ian Blackwell scored his first Championship century of the season to give Somerset something to smile about at last. After the top order made a steady start, Blackwell biffed 140 off 149 balls, including 22 fours and four sixes. He also shared a crucial 183-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Aaron Laraman, who made 70, as they closed on 347 for 7. Andre Nel took three wickets for Northants, but they cost him 100 runs, while Carl Greenidge (2 for 82) chipped in with two wickets.
England Under-19s 523 drew with South Africa Under-19s 262 and 453 for 8
Scorecard
Jean-Paul Duminy and Abraham de Villiers dashed England's hopes of squaring the Under-19 Test series, putting on 220 for the fourth wicket to secure a draw after following on at New Road. Duminy scored an accomplished 116, while de Villiers fell for 99 when bowled by Alistair Cook. East Springer then carried on the repair work for South Africa with 79, and the tail also weighed as England were left frustrated by the draw.
