India v West Indies

Wisden's review of the sixth ODI, India v West Indies

15-Apr-2014
At The Oval, June 11. India won by eight wickets. Toss: India.
India coasted into the semi-finals, in the process condemning Pakistan to an early exit. As in Cardiff the previous week, their batting hero was Dhawan, who survived drops when 23 and 41 to reach a run-a-ball hundred and help overhaul a modest West Indian total with nearly 11 overs to spare. But the damage had already been done by India's bowlers. West Indies had advanced to 103 for one in the 20th over thanks to some rustic blows from Charles, who later doubled up as wicketkeeper following Denesh Ramdin's two-match suspension. But they then came a cropper against India's spinners, with Jadeja taking his first one-day five-for: straight and accurate, he turned the occasional ball just enough to keep the batsmen guessing. Generally, they guessed wrong: eight wickets fell for 79, and it needed Sammy's frolicky 56 from 35 balls to attain respectability. He put on 51 for the last wicket with Roach, whose share was nought. West Indies needed early wickets, but instead ran into an opening stand of 101 in 15.3 overs between Sharma and Dhawan, who also added 109 with Karthik. Strong all round the wicket, Dhawan reached his second hundred in six days with an upper-cut six off Dwayne Bravo. By now, the Indian fans' sadistic chants of "Are you watching, Pakistan?" had given way to admiration.
Man of the Match: R. A. Jadeja. Attendance: 20,757.
