New Zealand v India, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the first ODI, New Zealand v India, 2013-14

15-Apr-2015
At Napier, January 19, 2014 (day/night). New Zealand won by 24 runs. Toss: India.
The ebb and flow made masterful theatre as India approached their target of 293. Expat chants of "Koh-li, Koh-li" and "Dho-ni, Dho-ni" punctuated the Hawke's Bay dusk while the pair reduced the equation to a gettable 69 from 46 with six wickets in hand. But Dhoni's demise, for a 46-ball 40, signalled a collapse. The brisk McClenaghan struck three times in six deliveries, including Kohli - for a sparkling 123 from 111 balls - and the tail fell away. This was Kohli's 12th century in a one day chase, but the first which failed to bring an Indian victory, as New Zealand pursued the ball in the outfield like a $100 note in a hurricane. There had been excitement as Milne rattled the speedgun before limping off with a wicket and a side strain. But guile, as much as pace, was needed to shake Kohli, who straight-drove Milne's fastest delivery (95mph) for four. Earlier, Williamson and Taylor cajoled 121 in 25 overs for the third wicket, before the aggressive Anderson belted 68 from 40 balls, and enhanced his IPL credentials by depositing two of them on to the Harris Stand roof. Dhoni's dismissal of Taylor was his 300th in one-day internationals; he was the fourth wicketkeeper to reach the landmark, after Adam Gilchrist, Mark Boucher and Kumar Sangakkara.
Man of the Match: C. J. Anderson.
