Damien Wright grabbed a career-best 8 for 60 in 24.4 overs to keep Northamptonshire's hopes alive in an intriguing encounter at Headingley. By the close, they had reached 9 for 0 in their second innings, and were trailing by just 38 runs with all ten wickets in hand - a prospect that had looked far from likely while Phil Jaques was flaying all before him in Yorkshire's innings. He top-scored with a brilliant 176 from 254 balls, but aside from a gritty 51 from the keeper, Ismail Dawood, no other batsman could pass 26, not even England's captain, Michael Vaughan, who was bowled for 12 to become Wright's second victim.

Led by Will Jefferson's 93, each of Essex's top ten batsmen reached double-figures to secure a first-innings lead of 142. Phil DeFreitas, with 3 for 68, was the pick of Leicestershire's attack as he restricted their progress in the middle part of the innings, first by ending Jefferson's stay, then by removing Ronnie Irani and James Foster in consecutive overs. By the close, Leicestershire had reduced the deficit to 85, for the loss of Darren Maddy, who was bowled by Darren Gough for 6.

They came together at an inauspicious position of 160 for 8, but by the time Davies was bowled by Sanath Jayasuriya for 62 - his maiden first-class fifty - Durham had secured a vital first-innings lead. Plunkett finished unbeaten on 74, and with the wind back in their sails, Durham tore into Somerset's second innings. Steve Harmison struck twice with the new ball, and even picked up his England colleague, Marcus Trescothick, for 20, before Paul Collingwood removed Jayasuriya for 17. It was Collingwood's sixth wicket of the match and Jayasuriya's sixth failure in succession. He has now amassed 57 runs in three first-class games.
