The selection process for the three age-group teams followed the usual pattern. The Under-19 inter-provincial tournament was played at Eaglesvale school on 4 and 5 September immediately following the very successful Harare Schools Festival which this year attracted 31 school 1st XI teams (28 local, two from England and one from South Africa). Once again the Under-19 Father Ken Nixon Shield tournament was sponsored by Shell as they have done for 20 years. The shield was won by Matabeleland for the second year in a row, this time defeating Mashonaland Country Districts in the final.
The national selectors picked 24 players for the final trial which was held at St. Johns College on 9 and 10 October, together with the Under-16 interprovincial. The Under-14 trials were held at the same time at St. George's College. For the third year in a row all these trials were sponsored by the Stragglers, a very generous commitment by these cricketing enthusiasts to junior cricket in Zimbabwe. The Under-16 inter-provincial tournament for the Mike Whiley Shield was won by Mashonaland who defeated Mashonaland Country Districts in the final.
