Zimbabwe v England 1999-2000

At Harare, February 20

At Harare, February 20. England won by 85 runs. Toss: Zimbabwe.
This was Hick's match: booed as he walked to the crease - some in his native land still harboured resentment that he preferred to play for England - he produced the perfect riposte. His commanding innings, which included ten fours, quickly compensated for the early loss of Hussain, and he looked set for a sixth one-day century when he was narrowly run out for 80. Maddy, with a maiden one-day international fifty, provided useful support, but when Viljoen took three wickets in five balls England needed some hefty blows from White and Caddick to hoist a challenging total. Hick, though, had not yet finished. After tight, penetrative spells from the new-ball bowlers - Caddick conceded only seven runs in eight overs - he capitalised on Zimbabwe's need for brisk runs. Two smart stumpings, two sharp catches by Mullally and one by Ealham brought him five for 33, and there were no jeers as he collected the match award. England, moreover, had won a one-day competition for the first time in eight attempts.
Man of the Match: G. A. Hick.
