Sun TV wins Hyderabad IPL franchise

ESPNcricinfo staff
107

The Sun TV network has won the Hyderabad franchise of the IPL, bidding Rs 85.05 crores per year (around $15.9m) for a five-year deal. The decision was announced after a meeting of the IPL's governing council in Mumbai on Thursday, and a week after Deccan Chargers, the original Hyderabad franchise, was terminated after failing to meet the deadline for raising its bank guarantee.

The other bidder for the franchise was PVP Ventures, who offered Rs 69.03 crores per year (around $12.9m). This was the second time PVP tried to buy the franchise, having failed last month as well with a bid of Rs 900 crores ($164m) for ten years.

In all, four firms had bought the tender document. Besides Sun TV Network and PVP Ventures, Jaypee Group and Videocon had bought the document but didn't submit the bid.

The IPL Governing Council has also taken a decision on future of the cricketers on the Chargers' roster which included high-profile names like Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and South Africa's Dale Steyn. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the BCCI has offered Sun TV time till the end of the month to sign contracts with those Chargers' players they would like to retain. The players who do not reach an agreement with the franchise will become free agents, going into the pool for next year's auction along with other capped players.

Sun TV Networks Limited, which is headquartered in Chennai, is one of India's biggest television networks with 32 TV channels and 45 FM radio stations primarily catering to an audience in the four southern languages of India. Their network includes channels covering news, entertainment, film, documentary and music.

The winning bid from Sun TV (about $79.5m for five years) is higher than the $107m for ten years the previous owners of the Hyderabad franchise, Deccan Chargers Holdings Limited (DCHL), paid back in 2008, when the league was being established. "This Franchise fee represents a premium of over a 100 % above the amount paid by DCHL for the Hyderabad Franchise in 2008," the BCCI said in a release announcing the sale of the new franchise.

Sun TV's bid price, which totals $80m or Rs 425.2 crores for five years is however, considerably less than what emerged during the last round of bidding for new franchises two years ago. In 2010, the Sahara group offered to buy the Pune franchise at $370m for ten years. In dollar terms, Sahara's deal over five years adds up to $185m.

In an attempt to draw more bidders, the base price for the franchise had been lowered to about $56m (about Rs 300 crore) for five years, compared to the base price of $225m for ten years in 2010, when the Pune and Kochi franchises were bought.

Chargers were initially terminated from the IPL last month after the BCCI claimed claiming defaults of payments to players, foreign boards and its possible "deleterious" effects on the league. A legal battle followed, with the BCCI winning last week, and then inviting bids for a new franchise. The board had previously agreed to help DHCL sell off the franchise, but had attracted only one bid which was rejected.

Sun TV will be clever enough to leave all the political overtones out of this venture, just watch. And what's up with people having problems with two owners from the same state? It is all about the "winning bid", so who cares who wins? This is not some government regulated licensed quota. Welcome to the free market.

Not clear why PVP's earlier bid which was higher than today's winning Sun TV bid, failed. Can somebody clarify? Sun TV has been running an airline well, I am sure they can handle a shrewdlyl priced cricket team well. Good thing is team is unlikely to move out of Hyd. Is there going to be bidding for one more team or is Gujarat unlikely to get a team now?

  • Vikramaditya100 on October 25, 2012, 16:56 GMT

I hope they wont take the same players again...Only Steyn and amit mishra are good in the team for T20...All other players(both local and international players) are not so good atleast in T20's..

  • akhilesh0109 on October 25, 2012, 15:08 GMT

unless the IPL GC removes player retention and uncontrolled unaccounted transfers, the league will stay the same.. MI, DD, RCB n CSK buying the good players or teams( MI got SACHIN n DD got Sehwag along with the franchise) n retaining them for rest of their careers isnt justified..MI got ojha, karthik etc n still had budget.. n the value of these players is untested whereas players like vinay kumar get 1 million just for being an Indian medium pacer. just imagine an auction starting with the members of Indian playing XI. it would be nothing less than a tug of war.. but with the money and power that these big teams hold, the bcci wont let go off player retention.. not until srinivasan holds both bcci n csk posts simultaneously.. pune will also not let yuvi go. so where do teams like hyderabad n rajasthan who missed out on the 2nd player auction get members of regular Indian playing XI?? something has to give in before the next mega auction to be held after the ipl 6 finishes next year

  • nav84 on October 25, 2012, 15:06 GMT

  • on October 25, 2012, 14:59 GMT

Hope more Tamil Nadu players would get a chance to be part of IPL through SunTV. But is it good to have two owners from the same State competing ? CSK and SUNTV ? CSK has been Chennai's favorites since beginning of IPL.

  • on October 25, 2012, 14:44 GMT

    @sundar02 ... I feel the same

  • Sanjeevakki on October 25, 2012, 14:39 GMT

The Best thing to have happend to IPL....The God thing is the franchise is from Hyderabad... I Hope Owners of Rajasthan and Kings Eleven Punjab too should be replaced by strong/powerful business houses like adani, jaypee, videocon and others... so that the competition among teams would be huge... and we will get some good quality cricket to witness... For Season 6 I hope all uncapped Indian players will be put up for Auction.... so that Good players are equally distributed among all teams (currently CSK,MI,KKR and RCB have good local players) For Season 7 we wil be having a huge Auction as all players will available for Auction...and I feel we will be having one more team probably from Gujrat.....Being Bangalore Fan.......I'm sure Kohli and Gayle will remain with RCB... so would be he case with other prominent players in other teams.

  • on October 25, 2012, 14:14 GMT

  • InsideHedge on October 25, 2012, 14:06 GMT

Without claiming to be an expert on business models in India, I would say this is an outrageous sum of money that Sun TV are forking out. Fairly soon, they will realize that they've entered a bad deal.

  • on October 25, 2012, 14:05 GMT

@afzalhyderabadi If you try to prove your point saying DD is indirectly a AP team, then DC and CSK are TN teams. Its not that we call it a TN team, we are proud for two owners from the same place and we have another team to support. Lets hope atleast these guys change the fortunes of the DC in the years to come.

  • symsun on October 25, 2012, 13:45 GMT

i believe they wouldn't mind if the name is not in tamil

  • afzalhyderabadi on October 25, 2012, 13:27 GMT

well it is good that hyderabad team remains. For those people who are soughting here that now chennai will have two team, i think they should first undergo IQ test. Do you guys know who is DD owner?? it belongs to Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao(GMR) who belongs to AP. MI owner?? mukesh ambani, gujrati. KKR owner? sharukh khan, mumbai & delhi. PWI owner?? subrato roy, bengali. So, you should know the basic fact that, the team belongs to the city for which it was bought, not the state or city to which its owner or share holders belongs?? So, please correct your mistakes, especially tamil nadu fans who are posting comments here.

  • perl57 on October 25, 2012, 13:25 GMT

@BetterReading 1)Baigan ki meri 2) Kyakee 3)nakkorebawa 4)Nee amma. They are better names. Deccan Chronicle was always trying to earn money and more money. Hence neither their businesses survived nor their franchise. If you think other franchisees are paying dues without fail check all the other ones like CSK. They still have to pay a glut to Dhoni, Raina etc etc.

  • arvindthiru on October 25, 2012, 13:20 GMT

its gud to hear that Deccan stays alive in the IPL....From now the deccan team will be made stronger because its managed by SUN TV networks...south indian people knows what this SUN TV is capable of...they hav acheived in many fields... more importantly deccan chargers can have a support from both A.P and Tamil NAdu people...and finally there is two team from chennai.....

  • Porky_PigTheToon on October 25, 2012, 13:10 GMT

No matter what you do - Change team's name, Change Owners, Change Dresses, Change overseas players, Increase Salaries, Change equipments, Change venues or whatever - unless you have good quality Indian players (at least 3), you won't win. See the top teams of IPL - MI, CSK, KKR, DD, RCB - they all have class Indian players. DC hardly have any !

  • sundar02 on October 25, 2012, 13:08 GMT

Worst thing ever happened to Indian cricket, entering of this group in to cricket. They are like poison to the cricket, slowly but steadily the will occupy all powers of cricket in India and they will repeat what they did in tamil nadu film industry and destroy for their own goodness. saddest day in Indian cricket, you people will realize that in near future.

  • IndCricFan2013 on October 25, 2012, 12:48 GMT

What this means is that all other franchise doubled their value in 5 years and poor Sahara lost half their value in a year. Sun TV jumped in at the right time, they do know how to run the business, hopefully Sanga and Steyn does not need to stop over to get Karuna's blessings ( read no political intervention).

I am a non telugu guy and a supporter of CSK, but I strongly believe that this team will come back in a big way representing the telugu resilience. Moreover sun group is more professional and with much better business acumen and they will market and promote the team much better. I think Deccan will go from the name as it reflects "Deccan Chronicle" and they will go with a new name altogether. Maybe something which starts with Hyderabad. All the best to the new team.

  • deadite11 on October 25, 2012, 11:46 GMT
