fullish and just a shade outside off, Rizwan opens the face and drives it handsomely through the covers. Pakistan have done it. They've mowed down 345
Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, 8th Match at Hyderabad, World Cup 2023, Oct 10 2023 - Match Result
10.25pm Pakistan gun down 345 - the highest successful chase ever in a World Cup - to win back-to-back games. Sri Lanka suffer their second successive defeat in this tournament. Shaheen and Rauf lift Rizwan. Babar hugs Rizwan. Emotional scenes in the Pakistan camp. Rizwan batted cramps and SL's attack on his way to a career-best 131*. Shafique, who was picked in place of Fakhar, announced himself with a career-best effort of his own. He had played just eight List A games before today, but he stepped up along with Rizwan to turn the tables on Sri Lanka. That's all we have for you from today's game. Until next time, this is Deivarayan Muthu signing off on the behalf of Madushka Balasuriya.
Rizwan, Player of the Match: Always proud when you perform like that. It was difficult and when you chase like that, it's always special. Every player in the dressing room had the belief we can chase that. Basically, it's a good track and we decided to calculate the innings. Sometimes cramps, sometimes acting (laughs).
Shanaka: Mendis is in form at the moment and is in the zone. Also Sadeera has been playing very well in the recent well, but we should've finished stronger in the end. Of course, I thought with the way the wicket behaved, we were 20-25 runs short. Credit to them, they bowled very good slower balls. I can't ask too much from the bowlers. I have given simple plans and coaching staff as well, but we gave too much extras. The only way is to encourage them. Unfortunately, we missed our chances.
Babar: I think Rizwan, the way he played... He built the partnership and put pressure on the Sri Lanka team. We finished well with our fast bowlers. First World Cup for Shafique and he is in good nick and I decided to play him. I think the way Rizwan and him played they helped us with the partnership. Good for us, the middle order has stepped up and just believe in ourselves.
full-toss on middle, which is whipped away straight to midwicket
slower dipper on the leg stump, clipped away through midwicket for a single. The scores are level.
Bashar: "Good batting from Pakistan. No matter how good the pitch is, it is always hard to chase down 344-odd runs. Pakistan kept their composure and is very close to the finish line without any drama..."
hip-high short ball outside off, Rizwan lines it up and powerfully pulls it away through backward square leg for another boundary
full-toss, slinging into leg stump, whisked down to Wellalage at long-off
Pathirana searches for the yorker but overpitched it outside off. This long half-volley is belted through extra-cover
full and floated wide of off, off-side wide from Pathirana
Thilini: "Sumanth: Enough of Pathirana tonight, please. My poor heart can't take anymore 5 wides."
low full-toss, slinging into leg stump, draws a leading edge that swirls over short third for four more. Attempted slower one from Pathirana
hadi: "Last 10 overs that Pakistan bowled is proving to be really crucial here. Difference between 344 and 370 was massive."
slot ball, full and on off stump, Ahmed sizes it up and drills it straight over Pathirana's head for four
Asif Ali: "Pakistan need to finish it an over earlier. Last over pressure can be risky"
round-arm dart, which is punched past the bowler to long-on
shorter and turns away outside off, forced to sweeper cover on the back foot
on a length and outside off, swept away to deep midwicket
Pranali: "Pathirana is playing his first world cup. Bowlers sometimes have bad matches in India under lights"
floated up on middle, poked back to Wellalage
Vipul: "This match is perfect example that bowling teams can still stage the comeback even after being thrashed for 40 overs. Last 10 overs of bowling by Pak will actually be the point of difference."
down the track, gets too close to the pitch and heaves it to long-on off the inside half
Ishan Jain: "@Sumanth - Even that might not be enough. Surely it wasn't enough against SA 16 years ago but boy that would be entertaining as anything!"
chopped away off the back foot to sweeper cover
Wellalage. Left-arm around the wicket
full and tailing into the pads, clipped away to deep midwicket
punched on the up to extra-cover
low full-toss, on the pads, picked away to deep midwicket
