sliced to short third, that's all she wrote! Binura has a dip and squirts a thick edge to the man on the edge of the ring. New Zealand win by 45 runs and take the series, 2-0 up with one to play
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2nd T20I at Mount Maunganui, NZ vs SL, Dec 30 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
10.55pm: Time for some presentations, Mitch Hay is a somewhat surprising Player of the Match: "Good to contribute to a good score. Trying to give myself a few balls to have a look, then swinging hard and found the middle a few times. Lucky to bat with Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell, they're so calm. Unbelievable few games with the fern on my chest, glad to contirbute to a few wins. Different feel but awesome playing in front of a home crowd, family here as well. Lot of pride in my keeping, training hard."
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka: "Disappointed with the results and the middle-order batting. We should have done better. [Challenge?] It's about adapting to the conditions. But at the same time, they were brilliant. It's important to finish the game, no matter how you started. In the first game we were almost there. Again, disappointed."
New Zealand's Mitch Santner: "Great performance. First with the bat, managed to put them under pressure in the powerplay. I said whoever used the wind best would do well and we managed that. [Duffy] Great to see, every time I bring him back he gets a wicket first ball. Best way to slow the run rate is to take wickets. Especially with a big breeze, if you get predictable it can be easy for the batters. Trying to keep it out of the arc of the batters."
And that's yer lot for tonight. Madushka's report will be in the slot shortly, and we'll be back for more with the third and final match of the series, down in Nelson on Thursday. As always, thanks for your comments. Good night!
10.50pm: Pretty comprehensive from New Zealand, who put up an above-par total and then turned to their star man with the ball once again, Jacob Duffy bagging 4 for 15 as Sri Lanka crumbled. They were just about in the chase with five overs to go, although 60 off 30 was always a tough ask; but after Kusal Perera was dismissed by Duffy for 48 off 35, the innings fell away dramatically, their last seven wickets going down for 14 runs
Foulkes to close out. One of the easier 20th overs he'll bowl, I'd imagine
goes for the stumps, full on off. Blocked!
Nuwan Thushara is last man. Henry on a hat-trick
and will walk straight back, nicked off the first ball! Henry picks up his second, as Hay takes a tumbling catch to his right. This is going down the gurgle rather quickly for SL
Matheesha Pathirana walks in
full, wide and slashed to third! If he'd left the ball it would have been a wide. Instead, Avishka breaks the wrists on a classy looking square drive and sends it down the gullet of the man back. SL lose their eighth, unfurling the white flag now
full on off stump, 130kph, punched to cover
goes for wide blockhole, maybe not quite as full as he'd like. Binura swings and misses
Henry returns
Finishes with pristine figures of 4-15. Duffy the Lanka Slayer Pt 2
fullish on the stumps, thick-edged through midwicket on the drive
One more shot at a five-for for Duffy
pitched up, Avishka makes room and swats a slower ball down to long-on
Mark: "Come on Duffy, one more for your 5-for. You deserve it how well you've bowled in the last two games. COME ON"
full and straight, poked into the off side for one
fired down the leg side
Binura Fernando is the No. 9
plinked to long-off! SL are going down like a heap of dirty laundry once again. Mishit down the ground and Theekshana goes second ball. NZ can't get enough of that wonderful Duff
bouncer, climbing through at 133kph
Maheesh Theekshana is in
another first-ball wicket for Duffy! A brilliant offcutter and Hasaranga is castled trying to play off the back foot. Chopped into the base of middle. Third wicket of the night for Duffy as NZ move a step closer to sealing the series
AG: "Duffy is too hot to handle for SL at the moment." He's going to finish his allocation here
tossed up and spinning away as Avishka swings and misses
holes out to deep midwicket - but Phillips has to throw it back in! Brilliant work in the end, he knew he couldn't hold on to the ball without going out of bounds, so he wisely opts to save the boundary
Wanindu Hasaranga is the next batter up
slog-swept... straight to deep backward square leg! Is that the game for NZ? Fired in and Asalanka can't get enough elevation as he targets the boundary. Could barely have picked out the boundary rider better. Off goes the SL captain, with his side's hopes waning
dabbed towards point for another single
over to the lefty, 94kph outside off, Asalanka drops back and chops behind point
round the wicket, angling in and cut away
Santner back, 55 needed from 24
