another full toss bashed through the covers, and Rockets scrape home by two wickets! It was a dogfight to the very end, but Trent Rockets come out on top with two balls to spare
Originals vs Rockets, Final at London, Men's Hundred, Sep 03 2022 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Rockets won by 2 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
9.55pm: Okay, I think that's it for another year in. Trent Rockets and Oval Invincibles are the Everyballcounts Hundred champions, and the teams are cavorting in the traditional style with their massive slabs of bling on the Lord's outfield. We'll have plenty of reaction and analysis to come from Matt, Vish and Paul at the ground, and then it's onward and upwards to the third Test between England and South Africa, starting on Thursday. Why not give it a try? Thanks for your comments, as always. Cheerio!
9.45pm: For some reason the men get proper post-match presentations. Here we go... Sam Cook is the Match Hero: "It's brilliant, bit overwhelming. It's a brilliant tournament, so much fun to play and to win is icing on the cake. I'm glad I didn't have to go in there, bit nervous on the bench. Unbelievable from Lewis at the end. [Yorkers?] Played a bit of T20 here before, something that worked here before. Nice to nail them and get some wickets. We've had an amazing atmosphere, everyone's got on so well. Been a real family atmosphere and to crown it with a win is really special. [Flower] He's an incredible coach, world renowned and won numerous comps. Been brilliant, and led us to this victory."
Rockets captain Lewis Gregory: "It was nice to be there at the end and get the team over the line. Lads have been fantastic, not much has gone wrong and this is a special moment. [Last set] Try to hit the middle of the bat. We needed boundaries, luckily I got one away. Sometimes things go your way. The Manchester guys put up a fantastic fight, to get to the final after their first three games was a massive achievement. [Patel, Cook] One good thing about this squad is someone always puts up a hand when needed. [Pitch?] Everyone seemed to struggle, not much pace in the surface. Both teams bowled brilliantly, thankfully we snuck over the line."
9.38pm: We had a nipper to finish the Fundred, though there will be some that question whether such a sticky pitch is really the ideal stage for two marquee finals. Rockets have been the best team through the course of the men's tournament, and they squeaked home in a final-set finish, Lewis Gregory the hero for his side. No one scored more than Dawid Malan's 19 off 18, and Originals fought valiantly until the end - but ultimately they had too few on the board
"What is it about Lords finals?? On a more serious note, has there ever been an English tournament without a single rain shortened match before??" No idea, Dezz. But clearly the weather gods are all in on 100-ball cricket
"That was poor from Gleeson, who is an international bowler," grouses James. "Field set for bowling wide of off, Gleeson bowls down leg (with the short boundary on the leg side) twice."
J Pearce: "Anybody thought of Gregory as replacement for Bairstow in the England T20 World cup squad? Bowled well, captained well and at least 2 innings seeing The Rockets home under severe pressure throughout the tournament. Just a thought." Not sure he's much of an opener, though?
full toss, helped to fine leg! Gregory lets out a roar and celebrates with his partner. Two bad balls and Rockets are almost home and hosed
Now just 5 needed from 4
full, straight and belted over square leg! In the slot at 89mph and Gregory nails it into the crowd! What a hit from the Rockets captain
Gleeson to finish things. Rockets need 11 off 5... and if scores are tied, we'll have a "Super Five" for the first time in the Hundred
hammers a length, 88mph and Gregory doesn't get hold of a short-arm jab... but the poor connection enables them to run two into the leg side, meaning Gregory will keep the strike for the final set
length delivery in the channel, Wood gets some bat on it for one out to deep cover
pitched up, just slides past leg stump! Not called wide by Saggers, with Wood walking across
In walks Luke Wood... and Originals have now missed the cut-off! So that means only four men allowed out for the last eight balls, Lengthy discussions between captain and bowler about how they want to set the field
pitched up and Carter holes out this time! Goes for the short boundary but hits it sweetly down the throat of Hartley at long-on! Rockets' hopes are hanging by a thread here
"Despite that wicket, seems like Phil is feeling a bit salty?" Yes, Temba, sounds like there has been some industrial language thrown around out there...
over the wicket, slightly short outside off, sliced down to third
Little back for the penultimate set. Originals are going to be tight on the cut-off here
Carter, by the way, has helped get Rockets over the line in a small chase before
shuffles across and prods the ball away defensively
tossed up on off, tapped back
Matthew Carter is out at No. 9, Rockets need 15 off 12. Slip is in
skied to long-on! Sams looks to try and break the chase with a second big hit, but doesn't get the distance on this one. Taken in the deep by the ebullient Stubbs and Originals are beginning to believe that the heist is on
caught on the rope... but Lammonby takes it over! Sams launches this, struck well but it's the long boundary and the fielder was in the game. But at the moment Lammonby took the catch, he stepped on the rope, and carried it beyond bounds
length ball, spins and grips to take the edge. Gleeson chases it down from short third, but they pick up three
Hartley back on with three sets to bowl
Out comes Rockets' captain, Lewis Gregory. They need 24 from 15, with boundaries hard to come by out there
Moores flubs to cover! Originals chip out another, Walter the man... slower ball into the pitch, he was swinging for the hills but it comes off the top edge, and Stubbs takes it backpedaling in the ring. This one is going to the wire, folks!
short of a length, miscued into the leg side... all height and no trousers on Sams' pull, and it falls well short of being a catchable chance
full toss, toe-ended over mid-off! Sams was stretching for it but managed to clear the man and it skips away
jaffa from Walter, kicks through to Salt, was there an edge...? Think it just flicked the back trouser pocket on its way through
short of a length and swung away through square leg
Walter for his final set. Still 1.5 RPB required by Rockets
vital dot ball, as Stubbs makes a diving stop in the covers
pushed through on off stump, driven down to long-on
