LAHORE, Dec 19: Batsman Aamir Sohail on Saturday recorded his
statement in-camera before an Inquiry Commission probing charges of
match-fixing and betting. This was the second statement of Aamir
Sohail which continued for over an hour, his earlier statement was
made in open court.
The commission comprising Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum has so far
recorded statements of 45 persons, including present and former
cricketers, Pakistan Cricket Board officials and alleged bookies.
Talking to journalists after the proceedings, PCB Legal Advisor Ali
Sabtain Fazli said that no other witness, except two Australian
cricketers was under notice. He said that Wasim Akram had sought
permission to cross-examine the witnesses who had made allegations
against him in their statements before the commission. He said that
no date has as yet been fixed for cross-examination of the witnesses.
About Shane Warne and Mark Waugh's re-examination, the legal adviser
said that arrangements were under way for examination of the
Australians by the commission through satellite contact.
Replying to a question, the legal adviser said that the statements of
the bookies examined had established that betting was practised in
the society at a large scale. He said that betting rates were
prescribed by bookies and bets were made even at the lowest level in
the society.
