James Anderson's seven wickets helped England beat India by 266 runs in the third Test that ended at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.
Alastair Cook, the England captain, found form with a solid 95 in the first innings, and Ian Bell and Gary Ballance capitalised on a good start with big hundreds. England posted a formidable 569 runs in their first innings.
After heroics from the batsmen, England's bowlers - led by Anderson - came good. Anderson and Stuart Broad dismissed India's top four batsmen with just 136 runs on the board.
Moeen Ali then bagged two wickets before the Anderson-Broad combine returned and dismissed India's lower order. The tourists managed just 330 runs in their innings and failed to avoid the follow-on. Anderson finished with figures of 5 for 53 and Broad with 3 for 66.
Cook opted to give his bowlers a break and came out to bat. The decision paid dividends as England batsmen scored briskly to add 205 runs in 40.4 overs before declaring. England set India a target of 445 runs to win.
India got off to a disastrous start in the second innings and lost inform opener Murali Vijay via a run out for 12. Cheteshwar Pujara added just two runs to the tally before being dismissed by Ali. India lost two more wickets and ended day four at 112 for 4, still 332 runs adrift.
On day five, Anderson dismissed Rohit Sharma in the first over of the day and then captain MS Dhoni three-overs later. India's lower order failed to recover from the early blows and fell for just 178 runs.
"Don't think we lost a session in the game," Anderson said, after being named the Man of the match. "It was a fantastic performance through the five days. 570 is a huge score for the bowlers."
"There was a different atmosphere in the field, me and Broady to set the tone with the new ball, thrown ourselves around. It swung both innings and that makes my job easier cause that's what I'm good at and if it keeps swinging hopefully I can continue," he said.
