At Gymkhana, Nairobi, August 30. Australia won by 224 runs. Australia 5 pts. Toss: Pakistan.
An imperious 146 from the Australian opener Hayden made this a memorable day. He flogged
Pakistan for six sixes and 12 fours in a stay of only 128 balls, as Australia made light of their
ten-week break from the international arena and rattled up 332 for five. Hayden's savagery
endangered the lives of everyone in the vicinity: twice he hit the media centre with lofted drives;
once he pull-drove Waqar Younis over mid-wicket and out of the ground. It was the third-highest
score in a one-day international by an Australian. Missing the injured Inzamam-ul-Haq, and with
Yousuf Youhana sent home for disciplinary reasons, Pakistan folded in reply - all out for a miserable
108. Gillespie's five for 22 made it a quick finish, with the Pakistanis surviving only 36 overs.
The 224-run rout was Pakistan's worst-ever in terms of runs, Australia's biggest over Pakistan and
their second-biggest ever.
Man of the Match: M. L. Hayden.
