Given the authoritative fashion in which Australia began their innings - 80 for 1 in 13 overs - the collapse that followed seemed far-fetched. The remaining nine wickets fell for 71 runs and Trent Boult, identified by Richard Hadlee as one half of the best new-ball pair New Zealand had ever produced, was at the centre of it. After a wicketless first spell, Boult blindsided Australia in his second: 5-3-3-5.
He had Glenn Maxwell chopping onto his stumps for 1, two balls later, Mitchell Marsh dangled his bat meekly outside off, his feet barely moving towards the line of the ball, and edged it onto his stumps too.
From 95 for 4, Australia slipped to 97 for 6 and were in deeper trouble in Boult's next over after Michael Clarke fell right into New Zealand's trap. Brendon McCullum had deployed Williamson at short cover, and Clarke obliged with a mistimed drive straight into his hands.
The Boult-Williamson combine consumed Mitchell Johnson as well and three balls later, Mitchell Starc, who went on to bowl a memorable spell himself later in the day, became Boult's fifth victim. This one pitched on leg, and swung away to beat the batsman's flick and leave middle stump flat on the ground, and the ninth Australian batsman in the shed.
