Chris Cairns and Chris Harris will bolster New Zealand when they join a 14-man squad for the three-match Chappell-Hadlee Trophy against Australia on December 1. Cairns, Harris and Andre Adams are the three additions, and John Bracewell, the coach, said they would bring new enthusiasm to the camp.
"This is a squad that has performed pretty well during the last 12 months," Bracewell said. "They have hardly lost a one-day match, and there is a degree of confidence." Bracewell said that apart from injuries to Daryl Tuffey, James Franklin and Michael Papps, it was the nucleus of the squad that lifted them to No. 3 on the ICC's one-day championship table.
Bracewell said that Cairns, who has retired from Test cricket, and Harris have kept match-fit by playing in the New Zealand Academy warm-up games. "They always add value to the squad on and off the field," he said. "We like what Adams will offer us as an impact player in Australian conditions."
Tuffey said he was looking forward to regaining his place, but wanted to be 100% sure of his fitness. "The rehab is going well, but I'm not quite ready for international cricket," he said. "I am playing in the first couple of State Championship matches to get some form under my belt and am looking forward to putting my hand up for the home series."
The Test players Mark Richardson, Chris Martin and Paul Wiseman will travel back to New Zealand on December 1, while Franklin will join them to prevent further damage to a groin injury. The first match of the one-day series will be at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne on December 5.
