Central School won the first ever all-girls competition in Vanuatu, beating Wan Smol Bag in the final of the Under-17 championship. Central went through the two-month season of Super-8s matches undefeated, and were deserving winners.
In the final, the enthusiastic team showed their class, dismissing Wan Smol Bag for just 17 and then their aggressive batting allowed them to reel in the total with plenty of overs up their sleeves. The girls from the WSB Youth Centre, though, have improved out of sight as the season progressed.
This year's Under-17 competition involved two other schools - Vila City College and Malapoa College. But next year it's likely the competition will expand dramatically, given the success of this year's Championship. With hundreds of young girls exposed to the game through the local junior cricket competitions - such as the Ridgway Blake SEPSSA Games - the potential is certainly there.
