The ECB are exploring ways of generating more income from the England team, which could include playing extra matches in non-Test-playing countries ahead of the main winter tours.
The Independent newspaper reports that with the domestic calendar so tightly packed more overseas fixtures is seen is an attractive option. Dubai would be a possible location, as the team often transits through the city as it travels around the world during the winter. World Sports City, the new state-of-the-art sports complex, is due to be completed in 2007 and is expected to attract international events.
Most of the extra income generated from these matches would be ploughed back into the national team, which would allow for more centrally contracted players - something Duncan Fletcher is keen to implement. However, the ECB are realistic enough to realise that any extra matches tagged onto an already packed international schedule would not be the main priority of the team, and that the major stars would not always turn out. But they believe the matches could provide an opportunity for fringe and squad players to experience international conditions.
The Indian and Pakistan boards have recently agreed to play two one-day internationals in Abu Dhabi during April to tap into the lucrative Asian markets. They are also planning a series of matches in Europe, which could include matches in England - with Lord's targeted as a possible venue.
