England v Zimbabwe 2000

At Manchester, July 13 (day/night)

15-Apr-2001
At Manchester, July 13 (day/night). England won by eight wickets. Toss: Zimbabwe.
England's victory was as ruthless as their previous defeat had been gutless. And it showed the potential value of net run-rate had clearly sunk in. Andy Flower chose to bat on a lively pitch, only for wickets to fall like autumnal leaves as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 114 in the 39th over. Stewart equalled Adam Gilchrist's record of six one-day dismissals in an innings, while allEngland's bowlers finished with something in the bag, even Trescothick, who netted two wickets from ten balls. Zimbabwe's last four batsmen departed at the same score. In theory, this was England's first home game under lights - though with a 7.30 p.m. finish as England won inside 21 overs, they were barely noticeable. Flintoff helped ensure a rapid conclusion, wielding his bat as Thor did his hammer, bludgeoning 42 off 45 balls, the smartest riposte to questions concerning his weight and fitness. He greeted his match award with the comment: "All right for a fat lad." Trescothick added another 29 to his tournament tally, while Stewart's 12 was his third in succession.
Man of the Match: A. Flintoff. Attendance: 11,388; receipts £260,434.
