Fourth 1000-run year in a row for Hayden

Matthew Hayden became the first player to score 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year four times in succession.

Hayden, 33, reached the milestone shortly before the close of the third day of the second Test against New Zealand when he reached 10. He is the ninth batsman this year to achieve the feat - the others are Brian Lara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Kumar Sangakkara, Damien Martyn, Virender Sehwag and Justin Langer - but no others have managed it three seasons on the trot, let alone four.

In 2001, Hayden made 1,391 runs, with 1,160 in 2002 and 1,312 last year. Former West Indies captain Viv Richards still holds the record for most calendar year runs with 1,710 in 1976.
