Glamorgan won a thrilling match at the Rhos-on-Sea ground beating Yorkshire by 1 run, as Michael Kasprowicz
dramatically ran out Darren Gough off the final ball, as the visitor`s last pair desperately tried to scamper
the runs they needed to tie the match. Needing to hit two runs to win the game from the final delivery, Matthew Hoggard
drove a full length ball from Kasprowicz back towards the bowler, and set off for the run that
would tie this gripping contest. However, the Australian swooped on the ball in his follow through, swivelled and
threw at the wicket, hitting the stumps at the batting end with Gough just out of his ground.
Such a nerve-jangling end had seemed highly unlikely as Yorkshire slipped to 150-7 in the 35th over,
after Dean Cosker had taken 3/19 in his first seven overs, as the Tykes attempted to chase
239 after they had put the Welsh county in. However, Michael Lumb then unleashed a
furious assault on the Glamorgan bowlers, and after having made a watchful half-century from
73 balls, he then went into overdrive, hitting three sixes and three fours in his next 22 balls, as
together with Darren Gough they added a blistering 59 in just 6 overs. But after hitting a six and a four
in Dean Cosker`s final over, he was well caught by Matthew Maynard off the spinner`s final delivery,
and departed for a career-best 92 with Yorkshire with Yorkshire still needing 30 from the final four
overs.
But this was not the end of Yorkshire`s resistance, as Gough and Steve Kirby continued to keep the scoreboard
ticking over. Gough had earlier been sportingly recalled by Mark Wallace after the wicket-keeper`s glove had
broken the stumps as he ran out the former England bowler. After striking 14 in Kasprowicz`s
penultimate over, the Queenslander then bowled Kirby with the third ball of his final over as the game
reached its dramatic climax.
Glamorgan had earlier been guided to what proved to be a match-winning total by a steady 61 from Mike Powell
as Glamorgan reached 134-1 in the 25th over. They had been given a flying start after Robert Croft and
Jimmy Maher had launched the Glamorgan innings with 54 in the first ten overs, before Croft, who had
earlier hit Steve Kirby for four successive boundaries was leg before to Darren
Gough. Maher went on to record his second League half-century of the season
before being caught on the boundary by Kirby off Yuvraj`s left-arm spin.
Indeed, it was the introduction of the Yorkshire spinners that put a brake on
Glamorgan`s progress, as the Welsh county lost 9 wickets for 104 runs in the final 20 overs.
David Hemp made a valiant 37, whilst Wharf hoisted Matthew Hoggrd into the
crowd for a giant six as Glamorgan finished their allocation on 238-8. Many felt
that Glamorgan were a dozen or so runs short, but it proved to be enough - just!!
