'Gravy' recovers after shooting in Antigua

Laban "Gravy" Benjamin - well known for his comedy routines at cricket matches in Antigua - is nursing a bullet wound to his left arm after he was involved in a shooting incident late on Friday night.

Benjamin said he was driving home when a gold-coloured car overtook him and fired four shots at his pick-up truck just before 2am. He said when the first shot rang out he thought the car was experiencing problems, but soon afterwards one of the three other bullets struck him. "A car overtook me and rang out four shots at me, and then I felt a burning on my arm."

Benjamin, who runs a convenience store as well as a sidewalk-vending stall, said he drove to the nearby All Saints Police Station and made a report before he was taken to the hospital for treatment, and later discharged. He said he believed it must be a case of mistaken identity: "I thought they took me for the wrong person. I don't know anybody who could point a finger at me."

"Gravy", as he is popularly known, has been entertaining cricket crowds during Tests and one-day games since the early 1990s. Police say they are investigating the incident.
