Harvey battling for one-day place

MELBOURNE - Injured Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey should know by Thursday if he'll be fit to play in the one-day cricket series against India.

Harvey still holds hopes of being picked in the one-day squad despite fracturing a bone at the tip of his thumb while batting for Victoria against Tasmania in the Pura Cup match in Hobart on the weekend.

The one-day squad could be named by Friday and Harvey is hopeful he'll be given the all-clear by team doctor Trefor James the day before.

"Hopefully things will be right for India," Harvey said today.

"It's a little bit disappointing but everything happens for a reason ... the timing could have been better."

Although Dr James said the injury could take two to three weeks to heal, Harvey has still not been categorically ruled out of the vital Pura Cup match against New South Wales on the weekend.

"It's getting better each day," he said.

Unfortunately the injury is on his batting and bowling side and he is considering playing with a splint.

However, Harvey also knows that if he takes another knock on the injured digit, his hopes of playing in India would be dashed.

Harvey was injured after being struck by an Andrew Downton delivery in the early stages of his innings for Victoria against Tasmania.
