The Indian selectors in another move that surprised a few scribes
recalled Bengal stumper Saba Karim in place of Sameer Dighe. Just
two days ago Dighe had a very good game, picking up four
dismissals behind the stumps. Today, he finds himself back in the
cricketing wilderness. Amit Bhandari, who did not get a look in,
in any of the three One-Dayers has been dropped for no fault of
his. This kind of chopping and changing will not do the
youngster's confidence any good. The Delhi seamer has been
dropped is replaced by Javagal Srinath. Also out of the squad is
Bhandari's fellow mediumpacer Thiru Kumaran. Kumaran has not had
a very good series against South Africa thus far. However, it is
probably a shade unfair to expect him to do a whole lot more than
this on the placid wickets the matches were played on.
What is most surprising however is the inclusion of Tamil Nadu
south paw Sridharan Sriram. Sriram has been in the limelight
recently, amassing big scores for Tamil Nadu in the domestic
championships. However, it must be noted that all his good knocks
have been in 4 day games and he has not displayed an ability to
score quickly. Sriram's most recent knock of 288 against Uttar
Pradesh has caught the eye of the selectors.
The teams announced are for the remaining two One-Dayers of the
South Africa series and then on for the Coca Cola Tournament in
Sharjah. It has also been announced that Karnataka seamer
Venkatesh Prasad will join the team in Sharjah.
