Vinod Kambli went on to complete an unbeaten
double century as Mumbai played themselves into a
position of considerable strength at stumps on the
second day of their West Zone Ranji Trophy league
match against Gujarat at the Wankhede stadium on
Sunday.
Resuming at 340 for four, Mumbai went on to
declare their innings at 521 for five off 138
overs. The left handed Kambli, who was on 104 when
play commenced, went on to remain unbeaten with
203. The 28-yearold former Indian batsman batted
338 minutes, faced 241 balls and hit 23 fours.
With skipper Sameer Dighe (87), he added 234 runs
for the fifth wicket off 59.3 overs. Dighe batted
220 minutes, faced 168 balls and hit 14 of them to
the ropes. Kambli and Sairaj Bahutule (24 not out)
then belted the tired Gujarat attack during an
unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 85 runs off
18.2 overs before Dighe declared the innings
closed.
Gujarat were rocked early in their reply when
openers Nilesh Modi (7) and Vivek Gandhi (0) left
with only 34 runs on the board. But Niraj Patel
(54) and Mukund Parmar (33 not out) added 44 runs
for the third wicket. Patel's bright knock was
compiled off just 64 balls and he hit ten
boundaries. The recovery process was continued
with Mukund Parmar and Tejas Varsani (27) adding
46 runs during an unbroken fourth wicket
association which has so far lasted 14.4 overs.
But Gujarat, at 124 for three, still have a lot of
work ahead of them over the next two days.
