New Zealand v England

At Dunedin, March 4, 5, 7, 8

15-Apr-1967
At Dunedin, March 4, 5, 7, 8. Drawn. Cheerless conditions prevailed and so much time was lost through rain that a definite result never really appeared possible.
With Chapple suffering from damaged leg muscle, New Zealand had another new captain in Sinclair.
The start was delayed for nearly two and a half hours and only three and quarter hours' cricket took place on the first day when New Zealand lost five wickets while crawling to 83. The air was icy and the outfield sodden.
The second day was memorable for the excellent wicket-keeping of Murray -- he took an amazing left-handed catch from Pollard far away to leg -- and some more dazzling hitting by Motz. Allen tempted Motz, who hit him for 4 and three 6's one over, and added four more 4's while making top score in under two hours. Altogether New Zealand occupied six and a quarter hours for their total of 192.
England, too, found batting a slow business; during a brief third day's cricket of less than two hours, Cowdrey reached fifty in three and a quarter hours while England's total was taken to 181 for five. Next day Smith declared when Cowdrey, having hit seven 4's and batted five and three-quarter hours, still wanted 11 for his century.
As Shrimpton had gone down with influenza, Pollard opened the New Zealand second innings with Bilby and, though he failed, they lost only three wickets in the next two hours for 75, but after tea Allen, three wickets in two overs, caused a breakdown before careful play by Petrie and Puna kept New Zealand out of danger. Puna, off-spin, was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers. Following criticism of Bartlett's action, B.R. Taylor was given his place in the final Test.
