New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the second Twenty20, New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

15-Apr-2013
At Hamilton, February 19, 2012 (floodlit). South Africa won by eight wickets. Toss: South Africa. Twenty20 international debut: M. de Lange.
Richard Levi hit 13 sixes and a 45-ball century, both Twenty20 international records. In search of fireworks, Seddon Park's administrators reduced their already petite playing area to the size of a colts ground by bringing in the ropes - and the powerful Levi, a 24-year-old from Johannesburg, obliged. Mills got off lightly compared to Bracewell, but still saw fit to describe the conditions as "ridiculous", insisting Levi "would have been caught three or four times on a normal ground". The batsman himself had the grace to admit that a couple of the sixes were mishits. That still left at least ten which were not, and a couple carried well over 65 metres on the leg side at barely above head height. Another, a swat over long-off, travelled even further. By the time he switched his phone on after the match, there were messages from three IPL franchises. A month earlier, he had been uncertain of his place in the Cobras team in Cape Town; a week later, he was signed by Mumbai Indians for a life-changing $400,000.
Man of the Match: R. E. Levi.
