Pakistan: Inquiry Commission summons Warne, Waugh
By Our Reporter
LAHORE, Dec 12: The Inquiry Commission comprising Justice Malik
Muhammad Qayyum, probing charges of match fixing and betting against
certain cricketer's, on Saturday issued summons for Dec 19 to
Australians cricketer's Shane Warne and Mark Waugh.
In a letter addressed to the Australian Cricket Board, the
commission's registrar has said that the judge wanted to re-examine
Mark Waugh in view of the recent revelations about their accepting
money from an Indian bookie for passing out information regarding the
wicket and weather conditions.
The commission said it wanted to record the testimony of Shane Warne
who did not come to Pakistan when other Australian cricketers
recorded statements in Lahore. Pakistan Cricket Board said that it
would pay for the fare and hotel accommodation of the two players.
During the day, the court issued summons to an Urdu newspaper and a
news agency reporter with regard to a story published in the
newspaper.
PCB chairman Khalid Mahmood said that the reporters had wrongly
blamed him in their joint-story for asking batsman Amir Sohail to
make a wrong statement before the commission.
Asked by the commission to reconcile his statement made before it
that he did not have proofs about betting with a converse statement
by him published in a newspaper, the PCB chairman said that he was
misquoted by the reporter. He said that the published statement was
clarified the next day.
Amir Sohail who was summoned for re-examination did not appear before
the commission for medical reasons. He requested for two days to
appear before the commission. The commission adjourned the
proceedings till Dec 16.
