SOMERSET
26-Apr-2003
Somerset Sabres start their National Cricket League season on Sunday when they take on Durham Dynamos at the County Ground.
After suffering relegation at the end of last season the Sabres will be very to get their one day season off to a winning start, and the presence of Marcus Trescothick in their line up to open the batting will boost the teams confidence.
The last time that the two teams met at Taunton was in the final match of the 2002 season, by which time both teams were already relegated and on that occasion the Sabres were victorious.
After scoring 254 for 6, with Matt Wood scoring an unbeaten 88, the Sabres disposed of the opposition for just 79 in 21.2 overs, Pete Trego taking 3 for 14.
Looking ahead to the match Somerset coach Kevin Shine said: "We are all looking forward to the start of another new campaign in the one day competition, and we are feeling pretty confident."
With Ian Blackwell still injured, and Richard Johnson and Nixon McLean both being rested for the Derbyshire match on Wednesday after receiving minor injuries during the championship game that has just ended, Somerset will give young all rounder Gareth Andrew a first team opportunity. In addition Keith Parsons and Steffan Jones have been named in the team.
The Somerset Sabres team to face Durham Dynamos will be : Mike Burns, Marcus Trescothick, Jamie Cox, James Bryant, Keith Parsons, Rob Turner, Keith Dutch, Aaron Laraman, Gareth Andrew, Simon Francis and Steffan Jones, with Steve Davis named as twelfth man.
