Early morning rain delayed the start of Hampshire's Frizzell County Championship match against Durham at the Rose Bowl. Play got underway at 12:00 with John Crawley's continuous winning streak of tosses allowing him to chose to bat first.
Durham received a set back after half an hour, when Dewald Pretorius the South African seamer limped off with ham-string trouble having bowled just 4 overs.
Derek Kenway and John Crawley got to lunch unbeaten, but soon after Danny Law removed both openers and Robin Smith, to have the home side struggling.
Simon Katich then playing patiently and Will Kendall shared a 90 run partnership to take Hampshire beyong 150, but Will Kendall perished whilst attempting a suicidal second run.
Katich was then joined by Nic Pothas, leader in the National Averages and the pair stood unbeaten when bad light then rain curtailed play early. Katich reached his first century for his new county, against his former team Durham, his century in 3hour 40 minutes off 172 balls, striking 13 fours. Nic Pothas reached his half century, and with a better forecard for Thursday these and others will want to press home their advantage in the morning.
