South African domestic one-day competitions

Martin Williamson with a brief history of South Africa's domestic one-day competitions

The tournament started in 1981-82 when five teams competed in the Benson and Hedges Series. It was an immediate success with a public starved of top-class sport by the country's international isolation, and the tournament gradually expanded, with 11 teams taking part from 1994-95 onwards, as more sides were promoted from the B groups of South African cricket. Although sponsor names changed, it was not until 2002-03 when Namibia joined that there were any more fundamental changes. In 2004-05 the board completely reorganized the competition, reducing it to six franchise teams who played each other on a home-and-away basis.
In the following competitions, all matches were played over 45 overs with the exception of 1981-82, 1993-94 and 1994-95 which were over 50 overs
